Overview - .msg File Extension

MSG file extension is an email message created by Microsoft outlook and Exchange. It may contain the name of the email sender, date, subject, receiver, messages body or contact information etc. It is a binary file that can open with the help of Microsoft Outlook. MSG file contains plain ASCII text for header and body of the message contain hyper links and attachments. The main purpose of .msg is to scan or store the exported repository files. It can be created through drag and drop a message, appointment, task, contact from a Microsoft Outlook folder in Windows Explorer.

Structure of .msg file

The structure of MSG file is divided into 3 parts given below

  • email header: It stores header information like date, subject, sender, and recipients, etc.
  • message body: It stores the main message part such as text, hyperlinks, etc.
  • email signature: It is used to identifies the end of the message.
